Infected

So yesterday I managed to have my computer infected by a very nasty Trojan that, in a matter of minutes replicated itself and took over my machine. I’ve gone many years of PC usage (and Mac usage for that matter) without this happening to me. No less that 84 viruses found on the drive with the OS on it.
I could not get rid of them. This lead to a complete re-install of the system on a new disk. And I figured while I was in pain I’d inflict a little more by installing Windows 7. Having just gotten my machine almost to normal I have to say I’m very surprised by the performance of this new OS. All my apps seem to work without an issue. Drivers? Everything is automatic. I Did have to download a printer driver, my scanner and the Wacom driver but everything else related to the machine was taken care of by the OS. The speed of the new OS is noticeably faster than XP pro which I’m happy about and the interface seems to be an improvement (function wise) but I’ll still need to get my head around these new permission issues.

Computers – fucking waste of time.

(and you mac people…spinning ball of death…yes, I know about that too).

Hope all goes well from now on.

Linux or MacOS. I stop to use Windows since 1997 and I don't regret that decision. I still cannot see any advantage using Windows. Expensive, insecure, error prone and bad performance. Windows 7 is a better approach compared with the previous one? Maybe, but who cares. We have MacOS or Linux so why still worrying about Windows?…

Yes, we do have linux and OSX but at the time of my transition from OSX to windows (yes you read that correctly) there was no solid support from Nvidia for High end video cards on both platforms. I'm not talking about playing games here. I'm speaking about the $4000 cards you use to run Maya with and do hardware particle rendering. This is why I had to choose windows at the time. I don't prefer windows over anything else, I hate it actually, but OSX is just as bad in different ways (spinning ball of death still very much exists, video card support is better but still not a lot of choice and the cost for upgrading – buy a new machine!!?? is a tad expensive). I'm really computer agnostic. Just give me one that works, doesn't cost the earth (last count for me to upgrade to equivalent mac is $7000US – vs my $300US fix given I will need to pay for the OS in October) and has a reasonable (not cheap but not a new machine) upgrade path and runs the applications I need and I'll go buy it.
